Story Credits

Story credits are used to publish a story in Shorthand. Each time you publish a story, a story credit is spent. Our subscription plans include a set number of story credits to be used over the billing period. For more information on our plans: https://shorthand.com/pricing/

How do story credits work?

Story credits work differently, depending on which publishing option you use:

Shorthand Hosting, Story Embed & Restricted Access Shorthand Hosting

  • Each time you publish a story, you will spend 1 story credit. Each time you publish a project, if the project consists of a number of stories, this equals the number of story credits spent. For example, if you publish a project consisting of 3 stories, you will spend 3 story credits.

  • Each time you unpublish a story, you will gain back 1 story credit. Each time you unpublish a project, if the project consists of a number of stories, this equals the number of story credits gained back. For example, if you unpublish a project consisting of 5 stories, you will gain back 5 story credits.

  • Each time you republish a story or a project, you will not spend or gain back any story credits as the publishing status has not changed.

Self-hosted options (including Zip Export, Drupal/Wordpress plugins, Amazon S3, SFTP, API publishing)

  • Self-hosted story credits are similar to Shorthand hosting credits when publishing stories and projects only. Stories must also be published on the Shorthand server when choosing this option. Therefore, each time you publish a story, 1 story credit is spent, and each time you publish a project, the number of stories within the project, is the number of story credits spent.

Important to note:

  • If you unpublish a self-hosted story or project, you will not gain back any story credits. This is because once stories are self-hosted, we cannot guarantee if and when the story will be published in another location.

Where to view your story credits?

You can view the number of story credits available in your workspace by navigating to Settings > Workspace Settings > Usage. The total number of published stories your plan includes is the number of story credits available over the billing period. The number of live published stories is the number of story credits spent so far.

You can also see the number of story credits that are remaining in your workspace in the top-right corner of the story editor:

Please note:

  • Story credits do not expire.

  • Story credits can not be renewed or refreshed.

  • Story credits can be rolled over to the next billing period. This means that unused credits will be added on to the next billing period, as long as you have not cancelled your renewal.

If you require additional story credits, please get in touch with our Sales team at [email protected].
