Shorthand Hosting — Troubleshooting Guide

Shorthand Hosting is the easiest way to publish your stories. However, the setup process can be non-trivial for those not familiar with Cloud and Hosting configuration.

The first step is to decide which hosting method you will choose, as this will determine the complexity of setup and the issues that may be encountered:

For the purposes of demonstration, let's imagine that your company or publication name is ACME.

The different hosting options allow you to choose to have your stories hosted at addresses including but in no way limited to: acme.shorthandstories.com, stories.acme.com, and acmestories.com

Here's how those hosting locations could be set up.

Shorthand hosting (acme.shorthandstories.com)
No configuration or other changes required on your servers or with your domain registrar or host. Set up is completed within Shorthand.

Custom subdomain hosting (stories.acme.com)
If you already have the (e.g.,) acme.com domain, and would like the stories you create and host with Shorthand to show up at a subdomain of that existing domain, the following changes will need to be made with your domain registrar:

Two CNAMEs to be added to the DNS entries:
a) Subdomain
b) Certificate validation

Custom domain hosting (acmestories.com)
If you choose to have your shorthand stories appear at a dedicated domain of your choosing, your registrar will need to ensure that the domain DNS servers are pointed to Shorthand DNS. We'll provide the necessary DNS information to you.

Please note that Shorthand does not provide DNS hosting. You are expected to have your own DNS provider and to manage your domain names through that provider.

With Custom Domain Hosting, new rules cannot be set up.

The domain will be reserved exclusively for your story hosting, and other configurations (like custom Emails etc.) will not be supported.

Certificate Errors

Some domains are unable to have a certificate generated for them. If you encounter errors when generating a certificate, the following troubleshooting information, which comes direct from AWS, may help to resolve the issue:

Removing a shorthandstories.com publishing location

You can remove a shorthandstories.com publishing location when it's no longer needed, or when you've decided to switch to a different publishing location. In order to do this, you will first need to unpublish all stories and projects that have been published to your current publishing location.

Unpublishing your stories

To unpublish a story, open the story in the story editor and click the blue ‘REPUBLISH’ button at the top right:

Next, click the red ‘UNPUBLISH’ button:

Unpublishing your projects

To unpublish a project, go to the projects dashboard and click the blue ‘REPUBLISH’ button at the top right.

Next, click the red ‘UNPUBLISH’ button:

Removing the publishing location

Once all content published to the publishing location has been unpublished, you will be able to remove the publishing location via the workspace settings pane. Select Publishing Options from the dropdown in the top right hand corner of the dashboard.

Then click the "REMOVE PUBLISHING LOCATION" button next to the applicable Shorthand Hosting location.

If you do not have permissions to remove the publishing location, please get in touch with the owner of your workspace or our support team.
