Shorthand's Google Tag Manager (GTM) integration (available on some plans) allows you to easily add GTM to your Shorthand stories or projects in the following ways:
Adding your GTM Container ID into the story or project settings
Adding to a custom branded theme
Whichever way you choose, ensure that you add your tracking in one place only — see Adding Google Analytics for how to avoid double-counting your readers.
Add to a story
Click on the Settings tab in the story editor and scroll to the Analytics section. Simply insert the GTM Container ID into the field provided.
Add to a project
For a multi-story project, add your GTM container ID through the project settings and it will apply to all stories in the project.
Add to your theme
If you have a custom branded theme, simply contact our team and we can talk you through what you will need to provide.
Having GTM as part of a theme means that everything you publish using that theme will already have your GTM container and the tags it contains automatically loaded, with no need to add the container manually.
How it works once GTM is added
Once GTM has been added and you publish your story, the GTM container will be injected into the page, and any tags you've added to your container — such as analytics tracking code, conversion events and marketing pixels — will fire upon story load or custom-defined click events, provided the tag triggering conditions are met.
For information on how to set up custom click events (for example, to track outgoing link or button clicks), see Google's click trigger documentation.
