Shorthand stories are responsive to browser and device size, meaning they'll look different at different heights and widths, automatically scaling images, flowing text, and repositioning some elements to ensure readers get the best experience.
Because of these differences, we recommend that you check how your stories display at multiple sizes and on multiple devices.
You can simulate some basic devices with a story preview straight from the dashboard by selecting the option from the story-card menu.
After clicking preview, a new tab opens in the browser, showing the story full-screen. You can share the URL of this tab privately with colleagues for feedback.
Please note: as per our terms, this URL must not be shared publicly.
Each time you generate a preview it will use the same URL, but reflect the latest changes to the story.
An in-editor PREVIEW button can be found in the top right of the editor. Clicking the arrow on the button will open a menu from which to select a preview format.
Clicking any option from the menu (or clicking the larger part of the PREVIEW button) will open a new browser tab with a preview of your story. If you've chosen from the menu, the preview will open simulating the specific format you have chosen.
A row at the top of the preview tab presents buttons to switch between formats simulating typical desktop, mobile and tablet views. The tablet and mobile views can also be rotated to show in 'portrait' and 'landscape' orientations.
A QR code in the bottom-right of the preview window makes it easy to open the preview on a real phone or tablet by pointing your device camera at the code.
A button in the top-right of the preview window also allows previewing the story in "full-screen" - opening the story without the top row of simulated-device buttons or other interface options.
From the editor you can also click the share button and enter an email address or mobile number to send a preview link to an email address or phone number. This is a handy way to check your story on other computers and mobile devices.
The share window also shows a QR Code. Use a QR reader app or your phone's camera to scan the code and your device will display the story preview in its default browser.
Viewing previews as HTTP
By default we use HTTPS for story previews, however if you are using third-party scripts that use HTTP you can simply change the URL in the browser to HTTP.
For example, if your preview URL looks like this:
https://preview.shorthand.com/123456abcd
you can change it to:
http://preview.shorthand.com/123456abcd
... and your HTTP based scripts should now work.
