A flexible grid-based layout of columns and rows
This document details an older version of our Grid section.
If you have a story using the older Grid section described here, you can continue to edit it should you need to update an older story. Within the Editor, there is also an option to convert the older Grid section to the new one.
By default a Grid section features a heading followed by a row of three cells (on wide/landscape screens, which changes to a single column of three cells on tall/portrait screens). Each cell contains an image, title, and short paragraph of text. It's simple to add text and images, add and remove cells, rows of cells, and change the grid style.
Editing the section
Title
A heading is optional in this section. The default section includes some placeholder text that reads "Add text here" that won't display in the published story. To display a title, simply click on the placeholder text and enter something new. Options within the text box enable changing the font and alignment of the title.
Adding and deleting cells
Add a cell to a row of the grid by clicking the small green + button that appears between or to the side of an existing cell when your mouse is within the grid. Each row can have a maximum of four cells. If the row already contains four cells, the + button will no-longer appear in the row.
To delete a cell, mouseover the cell and a red x (DELETE CELL) button appears in the top right. Clicking it will delete the cell and all content it contains.
Deleting a cell
When a row contains only one cell, by default its layout will switch to display the image beside, rather than above, the text. The image can be swapped from left to right.
A row with only one cell. Clicking the arrow between the image and the text will swap their positions.
Adding and deleting rows
Add a row to a grid by clicking the small green + button that appears above or below an existing row. Rows don't each need to contain the same number of cells, and each row will fill the width of the grid, regardless of how many cells the row contains. To delete a row, delete each cell within the row.
Changing images
To change the image in any cell, click on the 'EDIT MEDIA' button that appears when you mouseover the top-left of the cell.
Buttons to change the image in the cell
The 'Edit media' modal will appear and allow for uploading images or video from your computer, or browse and insert free images from Unsplash. Remove the image in a cell by clicking the 'DELETE MEDIA' button that also displays in the cell's top-left corner. The 'EDIT MEDIA' button will remain in that location to enable re-adding an image if you wish.
Crop image to shape
Images can be cropped to different shapes. By default, the images are cropped to landscape. They can also be cropped to circle, square, portrait, or un-cropped. You can also set the selected crop as the default by toggling ‘Set as default’ which will apply the same crop to the rest of the images in the section.

Changing text
The text in each cell includes a heading and short paragraph. Both can be styled by highlighting the text and deleting or entering new text. Text styling options appear when any section of text is highlighted.
Adding other elements
Mouseover the icon of three dots that appears above and below each text block in a cell and a small media menu through which additional images, video, 3rd-party media, buttons, dividers, spacers, and code can be added.
Background
The background of the Grid section can be set to a colour, an image, or a video. To set a background colour, click ‘Section options’ and choose light, dark, or a custom colour.
To set an image or a video background, click ‘Edit background media’ and choose image or video and then add media. Video will be auto-played, looped and muted.
Media guidelines
Images you upload to a grid section do not need to be wider than 2560px.
Section options
Clicking the cog button in the top-left of the section or next to the section thumbnail will open the SECTION OPTIONS panel. Options include:
displaying the section on all devices (or only on mobile/tall or desktop/wide screen)
a choice of section colours/styles (including custom colours if your plan and theme allows for it)
choice of grid width and gutter size (the space between cells)
changing the background colour of cells and the colour of cell borders.
