Translate a story

Available in some Shorthand plans, Auto Translation provides a fast and easy way to generate a copy of any story translated into one of over 20 languages.

The translated copy will contain all of the sections, media, settings, and effects as the original story, and can then be further edited in any way you wish.

To translate a story:

From your dashboard, mouse over the story card for the story you wish to translate, and open the menu in the top right corner.

From the menu, choose the option labelled 'Translated copy'. A pop-up window will appear, from which the Source and Target language can be chosen:

The Source language is that of the current story, and in most cases it will be correctly auto-detected, with no need to specify a language from the list (though this option may be of use if you find that the translation result doesn't meet your expectations).

Choose the Target language (the language you wish for the newly-created copy of the story) from the second list. You have the choice to, after creating the translated copy, open it in the editor, or be returned to the dashboard.

Copy and translation will usually take less than a minute.

Then, on the dashboard, along with the original story, a copy will appear with its own card showing the translated title, a tag that identifies the story as having been 'Auto translated', and a link to the story from which it was translated.

After translation, there are no direct links between the original story and any translated copies. From this point, changes in any version of the story will appear only within the copy in which they are made. As a result, it is possible to edit the copies in any way to make them truly unique without affecting the original. You may assign other members of your team as owners, editors, or viewers of the copy.

To provide your readers with links to alternative-language versions of a story, they can be published separately and linked with buttons, text links, or through a Collection, or could be published as multiple stories within a multi-language Project.
